New business helps clients meet insurance needs
FARMINGTON — After working as a life and health department manager for more than 15 years for a local company, Rena Crochet decided to take a step and start her own small business to help others set up their insurance needs.
The result is RMC Benefits Professionals, located at 2110 Sullivan Ave., Suite 8, inside Sullivan Offices in Farmington.
Crochet said she opened her business to guide businesses in developing and establishing employee benefits, including health, dental, vision and life insurances.
The Farmington resident is also open to working with individuals, families and Medicare beneficiaries to meet supplemental insurance needs.
"When I meet with a client and we find a solution, whether it be an individual, a senior or an employer, then I help them and set it up, it's almost like a weight is lifted off their shoulders," Crochet said in an interview this month.
An upside to being an independent insurance agent is that Crochet can be appointed by more than one insurance carrier, which provides more options to clients.
Crochet has direct appointments from insurance carriers includes Presbyterian, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico, UnitedHealthcare, Delta Dental, Principal Life, MetLife and Vision Service Plan.
She also helps clients understand the verbiage of insurance policies.
"If you can clarify that for somebody, that really helps them as well," she said.
By owning her own business, she can enjoy the experience of providing quality customer service.
"I like helping people because you'd be surprised at the number of times someone will call me and leave a message and I will call them back and they'll be so grateful that I called," Crochet said.
The idea of starting a business was a concept she considered for a year.
Part of the steps she took to start her business included seeking help from the Small Business Development Center at San Juan College.
She said the center was "instrumental" in providing information about the process for starting a small business and the resources they offer are "phenomenal."
As Crochet continues learning about operating a small business, she is also continuing to attend classes offered by the center.
"Surprisingly enough the field is the same," Crochet said." I find myself doing the same things for myself that I was doing for other businesses because I'm still taking care of clients," she said.
