On April 15, 2024, Douglas Sydney Madlock went home to be with Jesus. He was born March 15, 1935, in Indianola Oklahoma. He was the son of Grover and Estelle Madlock. Doug graduated from Deming High School and then enrolled at New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell NM. Post-graduation Doug served in the United States Navy until 1963. While in the Navy he met the love of his life Clorita Newsome, and they married September 4th, 1959. They lived in San Diego during Doug’s enlistment and enjoyed many adventures with friends whom they stayed in touch with for a lifetime. After Navy life Doug went to work for El Paso Natural Gas Co and they lived in Aneth Utah. There they had two children (Doug and Sandi) and enjoyed raising their family and enjoying camp life. Eventually they moved from Aneth to Aztec where Doug served as Mayor for a term, and they were active in community life.

Doug and Rita bought a piece of property next to a creek in Vallecito Colorado where they spent summers and weekends with their family and friends. Vallecito was their special “piece of paradise”, and they made many happy memories with family and neighboring friends. After retirement Doug and Rita traveled with friends and family and went on long excursions to Alaska and the lower states in their Fifth wheel. They moved to Poverty Creek NM for several years where Doug was active in the volunteer fire department and he and Rita made new and lasting friendships while they were there. They eventually moved back to Aztec to spend more time with their family where they attended many sporting events with their grandchildren. They were often referred to as “Team Grandparents”.

Doug never met a stranger. He would greet you with a hug and a strong handshake. He was a people person and loved sitting and visiting with anyone he met. He was deeply loved by his family and friends and will be deeply missed by all. Doug is survived by his son James Douglas Madlock (Sharon) of Jerseyville, IL and his daughter Sandra Anniece Root of Aztec, NM.

He is survived by six grandchildren Jamie Lynn Madlock, Michelle Marie Madlock, Kimberly Ann Madlock, Douglas Brian Madlock (Tara), Tyler Ryan Root and Sarah Nicole Root, seven great grandchildren, three sisters Geraldine Skaggs of Moriarty NM, Mary Jo Lindsey of Deming NM and Judy Hattabaugh of Pahrump, NV. Besides his parents he is preceded in death by three sisters, Pauline Holcomb, Maxine O’Briant and Shirley Thrower.

There will be a Celebration of Dougs life on July 11 at 6:00 pm at 23 Rd. 3400 in Aztec, NM.
