COVID-19: Updates on case numbers and restrictions in San Juan County and Navajo Nation

November saw the highest number of COVID-19 cases in New Mexico since the pandemic began and the state entered December with a new tiered system of restrictions for business operations and gatherings.

The “red to green” tiered county-by-county risk system for reopening had a start date of Dec. 2. Counties can move between tiers based on the positivity and spread rates within their boundaries. This would allow less restrictive measures in areas with lower amounts of COVID-19 spread.

"Basically the whole state is red," said Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham during a Nov. 30 press conference that provided details on the tiered system.

Los Alamos County was the sole county not in the red tier at the start of December. No county was in the green tier.

The state Health Department maintains an official map displaying each county’s level on its COVID-19 webpage. Red signifies very high risk where average daily cases are 8 or more per 100,000 and test positivity is 5% or greater. Yellow is high risk and green is medium risk.

The map is updated every other week to capture an average over time that more accurately conveys the spread rate, officials said.

San Juan County's test positivity rate was more than 14% at the end of November.

Updates for Thursday, Dec. 31

4:38 p.m.: Health agencies on the Navajo Nation are reporting a single-day high number of deaths related to COVID-19.

The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center reported 23 deaths today. The latest fatalities bring the death toll to 806.

The agencies also reported 287 new cases, which includes 27 that were delayed in reporting. The total number of cases is now 23,090.

4 p.m.: The New Mexico Department of Health reported 1,684 new cases of COVID-19 on Dec. 31, including 196 San Juan County residents.

The Farmington 87401 ZIP code had 54 new cases.

These new cases raise the total number of New Mexicans who have tested positive for the coronavirus to 142,864.

Additionally, health officials reported 44 new fatalities related to the disease. The fatalities include a San Juan County resident in her 30s with underlying conditions who was hospitalized and two men who lived in San Juan County and were in their 60s. Both men were hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

There are 803 people hospitalized in the state with COVID-19.

Updates for Wednesday, Dec. 30

5:52 p.m.: Health agencies on the Navajo Nation are reporting 225 new cases of COVID-19 and two more deaths today.

"Health care officials believe the high number of new cases reported for the Navajo Nation on Wednesday is due to the delay in reporting cases due to the recent Christmas holiday," according to the press release from the Office of the President and Vice President that announced the update.

The total number of cases is 22,776 and includes 26 cases previously unreported. The update shows the death toll at 783 along with 11,714 people have recovered while 201,899 tests have been administered.

4 p.m.: The New Mexico Department of Health reported 1,316 new cases of COVID-19 on Dec. 30, including 139 new cases in San Juan County.

According to a press release, San Juan County remains in the red tier and saw an increase in the test positivity rate over the past two weeks. However, the number of new cases per capita decreased.

The Farmington 87401 ZIP code remains among the top ten ZIP codes in the state for numbers of new cases. Health officials say 34 of the new cases are people who live in the 87401 ZIP code.

The new cases bring the number of New Mexicans who have tested positive for COVID-19 this year to 141,186. Of those people, 2,436 have died including 33 new fatalities reported on Dec. 30.

The new fatalities include five San Juan County residents ranging in age from a man in his 50s to a man in his 90s.

There are 792 people hospitalized in state with COVID-19.

Updates for Tuesday, Dec. 29

5:15 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center are reporting 153 new cases of COVID-19 for the tribe.

Four more deaths were also reported by the agencies, bringing the death toll to 781.

"In certain regions of the country, we are seeing patients being turned away at hospitals and ICUs reaching full capacity, but here on the Navajo Nation we are starting to see our numbers of new cases of COVID-19 flattening out," Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said in the press release from his office that provided today's update.

Nez added that the impact of the Christmas holiday remains unknown, but officials urge the Navajo people to celebrate New Year's at home with immediate household members.

"The more we travel and the more that people hold in-person gatherings, the greater the risk of spreading the coronavirus. We have to stay focused on bringing down the numbers of COVID-19 cases even more to help our health care workers and to save more lives," the president said.

The total number of cases is 22,526 and includes two cases that were previously unannounced. The update states that 11,677 people have recovered while 200,584 tests have been administered.

4 p.m.: The New Mexico Department of Health reported 1,221 new COVID-19 cases on Dec. 29, including 105 new cases in San Juan County. There were 117 new cases in McKinley County, 30 new cases in Rio Arriba County and 72 new cases in Sandoval County.

According to state officials, 42 of the 105 new cases in San Juan County were residents of the 87401 Farmington ZIP code, which had the third highest number of new cases in the state.

Health officials also reported 23 fatalities related to the coronavirus. The new deaths include a San Juan County resident in her 70s who had underlying medical conditions.

Since the pandemic was first identified in New Mexico, 139,875 New Mexicans have tested positive for COVID-19 and, of those people, 2,403 have died.

There are 806 people hospitalized in the state who have tested positive for COVID-19.

The Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President released the latest tallies, which included reports that 11,494 people have recovered while 199,340 tests have been administered.

4 p.m.: New Mexico health officials reported 700 new cases of COVID-19 on Dec. 28, including 106 new cases in San Juan County. The Farmington ZIP code 87401 had the second highest number of new cases out of all New Mexico ZIP codes. There were 28 new cases in the 87401 ZIP code.

The New Mexico Department of Health also reported 36 new fatalities related to the virus, including a San Juan County resident in her 80s who was hospitalized and had underlying medical conditions.

Since March, 138,659 New Mexicans have tested positive for the coronavirus and, of those people, 2,380 have died.

Updates for Sunday, Dec. 27

10:30 p.m.: As case numbers continue to grow Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez urged people to stay at home as his office noted extended public health restrictions on activities on tribal land that start Monday.

“We are in a dire situation across the entire country, but the measures that we have implemented are working,” Nez said in a press release Sunday. “Compared to other areas in the country that do not have measures in place, we are doing better, but we still have to keep fighting COVID-19 together.”

The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies on Sunday reported 122 new COVID-19 positive cases on the Navajo Nation and 10 more deaths, bringing the number of deaths to 777.

The number of positive COVID-19 cases as of Sunday is 22,277.

There have been 11,402 recoveries and 197,876 COVID-19 tests were administered since the start of the pandemic.

The restrictions Nez referred to are in the Navajo Department of Health issued Public Health Emergency Order No. 2020-032 issued last week. The order, which starts on Monday, Dec. 28, and runs through Monday, Jan. 11, 2021, does the following:

• Extends the Stay-At-Home Lockdown requiring all residents to stay home 24-hours, seven days a week, with the exceptions of essential workers who must report to work, emergencies, getting” essential food, medication, and supplies, tend to livestock, outdoor exercising within the immediate vicinity of your home, wood gathering and hauling with a permit.”

• Re-implements for two more weeks the Nation’s 57-hour weekend lockdowns from 8 p.m. through 5 a.m. Jan. 1, 2021 through Jan. 4, 2021, and also from Jan. 8, 2021 through Jan. 11, 2021.

• Restricts operating hours for essential businesses including gas stations, grocery stores, laundromats, restaurants and food establishments “that provide drive-thru and curbside services, and hay vendors can operate” from 7 a.m. to 7p.m., but only Monday through Friday.

• Tells people not to gather with people who don’t live in the same household and requiring the wearing of masks in public by all residents, “avoid public gatherings, maintain social (physical) distancing, remain in your vehicle for curb-side and drive-through services.”

“President Nez and Vice President Lizer have also extended the limitation of Navajo Nation government services through Sunday, Jan. 10, 2021, due to rise in COVID-19 cases,” the press release from the Office of the President and Vice President stated Sunday.

7:35 p.m.: The New Mexico Department of Health report 747 new confirmed coronavirus cases and 30 additional deaths Sunday. That brings the total to 137,968 cases and 2,346 related deaths since the start of the pandemic.

The deaths include a woman from San Juan County who was in her 30s and had been hospitalized.

Officials say 758 people are hospitalized across New Mexico for COVID-19.

Around 60,500 people diagnosed with COVID-19 are considered to have recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health.

1:22 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies reported 307 new COVID-19 positive cases for the Navajo Nation and five more deaths in numbers that cover Friday, Dec. 25 and Saturday, Dec. 26.

There were 150 new cases reported on Friday and 157 new cases on Saturday. The reporting delay was due to the Christmas holiday.

The total number of deaths rose to 767 as of Saturday.

“Reports indicate that 11,362 individuals have recovered from COVID-19, and 197,161 COVID-19 tests have been administered,” the Office of the President and the Vice President stated in a new release. “The total number of positive COVID-19 cases is now 22,155.”

12 p.m.: A USA TODAY NETWORK analysis of Johns Hopkins University statistics for the week ending Saturday found that within New Mexico, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Chaves, Cibola and San Juan counties. Adding the most new cases overall were Bernalillo County, with 2,226 cases; Dona Ana County, with 932 cases; and San Juan County, with 906. Weekly case counts rose in nine counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in Dona Ana, Chaves and Cibola counties.

Updates for Saturday, Dec. 26

4 p.m.: The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 continues to drop, as the New Mexico Department of Health reported 749 hospitalizations on Dec. 26.

That number is down by nearly 200 since Dec. 3, when 947 people were hospitalized.

The state also announced 609 new COVID-19 cases and nine new deaths on Dec. 26. That includes 78 new cases in San Juan County.

McKinley County and Rio Arriba County added 34 and five new COVID-19 cases, respectively. Sandoval County added 30 new cases, while Bernalillo County added 125 new cases.

New Mexico’s total number of COVID-19 cases is now up to 137,226. The number of statewide COVID-19 deaths is now at 2,316.

11:47 p.m.: The Navajo Nation has reported 272 new coronavirus cases and seven more deaths, the Associated Press reported.

The latest figures announced Thursday by the Navajo Department of Health bring the total number of cases on the reservation that extends into Arizona, New Mexico and Utah to 21,833. The death toll from the pandemic now stands at 762.

According to the tribe, 11,316 people have recovered from COVID-19.

The Navajo Nation remains in a three-week lockdown requiring all residents to stay home except for emergencies, shopping for essentials like food and medicine or traveling to an essential job.

Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez says residents must not become complacent just because frontline health care workers on the reservation have started receiving recently approved vaccines.

He implored people to not gather over the holidays with anyone outside their own household.

Nez also issued an executive order Thursday limiting tribal government services due to the surge in virus cases until Jan. 10.

6 p.m.: New Mexico registered 29 deaths among its 1,927 new COVID-19 cases on Dec. 24, according to figures from the New Mexico Department of Health. That total included two people from San Juan County — a man in his 60s and another man his 80s. Both men had been hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

New Mexico has totaled 135,166 cases of the virus.

5:30 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, in coordination with the Navajo Epidemiology Center and the Navajo Area Indian Health Service, reported 157 Navajo Nation residents tested positive for COVID-19 today, according to a press release from the Office of the President and Vice President. There were no new fatalities.

Since March, 21,513 Navajo Nation residents have tested positive for the coronavirus and, of those people, 755 have died.

A San Juan County resident in her 20s who was hospitalized and had underlying medical conditions was among the 23 new fatalities reported on Dec. 22. Additionally, a San Juan County resident in his 40s who was also hospitalized and had underlying medical conditions died.

A San Juan County resident in her 80s who was hospitalized was among the nine new fatalities reported.

There have now been 130,808 New Mexicans who have tested positive for COVID-19 this year and, of those people, 2,180 have died.

8:10 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies reported 157 new COVID-19 positive cases for the Navajo Nation and one more death. The total number of deaths is now 746 as of Sunday.

There were 11,039 people who have recovered and 191,564 COVID-19 tests were administered. The number of positive COVID-19 cases had reached 21,019 as of Sunday, including 52 delayed reported cases, according to a press release from Navajo Nation leaders.

The Nez-Lizer Administration will hold an online town hall event on the Nez-Lizer Facebook page on Tuesday, Dec. 22, at 10 a.m. to provide additional updates on efforts to battle the pandemic.

Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez cited high transmission rates in neighboring states as a good reason for people to stay home for the holidays.

“The safest place to be is at home here on the Navajo Nation,” Nez said. “We are once again urging everyone to celebrate the upcoming Christmas holiday safely with only those individuals that live under the same roof as you. We saw a spike in new COVID-19 cases following Thanksgiving, so we want to avoid that happening again. Please be safe, stay home, avoid gatherings, wear a mask, practice social distancing, and wash your hands often.”

The Navajo Nation on Sunday night was close to closing out another 57-hour weekend lockdown. This one remains in effect until Monday, Dec. 21 at 5 a.m.

Preparations for more vaccinations also continue.

“Navajo Area IHS has completed the distribution of the first shipment of Pfizer vaccines for COVID-19, which were administered to frontline health care workers and those living in long term assisted living facilities,” the Office of the President and Vice President said in a press release Sunday. “The Utah Navajo Health System stated that they expect to receive the Pfizer vaccine on Monday. UNHS opted to work with the state of Utah for distribution of vaccines.”

“Our health care workers and first responders never stop fighting for us, so let’s keep fighting for them each and every day. We have to remain focused on protecting ourselves and one another until the vaccine is available for the general public,” said Vice President Myron Lizer. “Keep praying and keep fighting the pandemic together.”

5 p.m.: State health officials on Sunday reported 1,077 new COVID-19 cases and 16 more deaths, including a San Juan County man in his 40s who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

The ZIP code 87401 led the state’s top 10 list of areas with the most COVID-19 infections with 75 cases.

San Juan County listed 160 new infections for a total of 8,819 cases.

As of Sunday there were 820 people hospitalized in the state due to COVID-19 and 54,357 people who had COVID-19 and have recovered.

According to data from Johns Hopkins University and The COVID Tracking Project, the rolling average of daily new cases in New Mexico dropped from 1,869 on Dec. 4 to 1,542.1 on Friday while the rolling average of deaths rose from 28.9 to 34.1, the Associated Press reported.

San Juan County had 175 residents who tested positive for the virus along with three new deaths on Dec. 19.

The county had the second-highest amount of new coronavirus cases on Dec. 19, behind Bernalillo County with 449 cases.

The death of three men in their 70s were reported on Dec. 19. All three men were hospitalized, and one had underlying conditions.

There have been 276 deaths from COVID-19 in San Juan County so far. Sixty-five of those deaths have been in the last month.

That puts the total number of COVID-19 deaths statewide at 2,097.

The new deaths include two males from San Juan County, two females from Rio Arriba County and one female from McKinley County.

The state also reported 1,702 new COVID-19 cases on Dec. 17, bringing the total to 126,045.

San Juan County added 90 new cases, while McKinley County added 94 new cases.

New Mexico's added 606 COVID-19 deaths since Nov. 24, bringing the total to 2,006 on Dec. 15.

The new deaths include four people from McKinley County and eight people from Bernalillo County.

San Juan County added 75 new cases, while McKinley County added 73 new cases.

Updates for Sunday, Dec. 13

10:26 p.m.: On Sunday, the Navajo Department of Health, in coordination with other agencies on Sunday reported 183 new COVID-19 cases on the Navajo Nation and two more deaths.

As of Sunday the number of deaths had reached 720.

“Reports indicate that 10,371 individuals have recovered from COVID-19, and 182,322 COVID-19 tests have been administered,” the Office of the President and Vice President said in a release Sunday. “The total number of positive COVID-19 cases is now 19,608, including six delayed reported cases.”

The Nez-Lizer Administration will host an online town hall on the Nez-Lizer Facebook page Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 10 a.m. to provide the public with updates. Sunday’s press release said the forum will also air later on local radio stations. No times or station names were provided.

“Keep fighting COVID-19 together, stay strong, keep praying, and we will get through this challenging time together,” Navajo Nation Vice President Myron Lizer said in the release. “Our health care workers are not giving up on us, so let’s not give up on them and let’s help them by staying home as much as possible. Please do everything possible to keep yourselves and your families safe.”

8:04 p.m.: The New Mexico Health Department on Sunday reported 1,459 additional COVID-19 cases and 44 new deaths.

Three of the dead were from San Juan County:

• A woman in her 20s who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

• A man in his 70s who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

• A second man in his 70s who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

New Mexico has now had a total of 119,800 COVID-19 cases, 7,923 of them in San Juan County.

As of Sunday, 878 people were hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19. There were 44,130 COVID-19 patients the state designated as having recovered.

Here is an overview of the situation in our state with numbers reflecting case totals recorded between Dec. 6 and Dec. 12. New Mexico reported far fewer coronavirus cases in the week ending Saturday, Dec. 12, adding 11,502 new cases. That's down 10.7% from the previous week's toll of 12,874 new cases.

New Mexico ranked No. 14 among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week the United States added 1,480,981 reported cases of coronavirus, an increase of 10.8% from the week before.

Across the country, 31 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Across New Mexico, cases fell in 22 counties, with the best declines in Dona Ana, Bernalillo and Chaves counties. Adding the most new cases overall were Bernalillo County, with 3,744 cases; San Juan County, with 1,109 cases; and Dona Ana County, with 800.

Weekly case counts rose in 11 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in San Juan, McKinley and Rio Arriba counties.

Updates for Wednesday, Dec. 9

5:52 p.m.: The Navajo Nation saw 191 new cases of COVID-19 as well as five more deaths attributed to the virus, according to the Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center.

A press release from the Office of the President and Vice President states that tribal President Jonathan Nez and Jill Jim, director of the tribe's health department, spoke with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla today about the COVID-19 vaccine the drug company is producing.

The vaccine is pending approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which is expected on Dec. 10, the release states.

If authorization is granted, then the vaccine would be distributed under a plan by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As of Dec. 8, more than 43,000 people have volunteered for vaccine trials, including members of the Navajo Nation and the White Mountain Apache Tribe, according to the release.

The health agencies shifted reporting the number of cases in each county that comprises tribal land in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah to reporting cases in the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS.

2 p.m.: The New Mexico Department of Health reported 1,271 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, Dec. 8. The report was released today because of a network outage. The new cases included 97 San Juan County residents and raised the number of New Mexicans who have tested positive for the virus to 111,202.

The state also reported 33 new COVID-19 fatalities, including three San Juan County residents. Those residents included:

A woman in her 40s who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions
A man in his 60s who was hospitalized
A woman in her 80s who lived at the Aztec Healthcare facility

Since March, 1,789 New Mexicans have died because of COVID-19.

There were 925 patients hospitalized in the state on Dec. 8.

5:52 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center report 159 new cases of COVID-19 for the tribe.

Today's figure raises the total number of cases to 18,324. The health officials also reported six more deaths, bringing the death toll to 688.

The Office of the President and Vice President release the information, which stated that 10,075 people have recovered while 175,072 tests have been administered.

According to the release, the Navajo Area IHS reported that floor bed occupancy is over 80% and intensive care units are not at capacity, but that is due to the expansion of ICU beds to accommodate patients.

"The status of ICU capacity continuously changes and continues to be monitored by HIS officials," the release states.

3:40 p.m.: The daily update of cases from the New Mexico Department of Health has been delayed due to an outage in the state government internet network, according to a press release. The Tuesday numbers will be available on Wednesday, Dec. 9.

Meanwhile, San Juan Regional Medical Center reported that 65 of the inpatients in the hospital on Dec. 8 had tested positive for COVID-19.

Updates for Monday, Dec. 7

8 p.m.: Health officials on the Navajo Nation are reporting that 15 more people have died of COVID-19, an unusual high number in a single day for the tribe.

Also reported were 213 new cases of the virus, including 35 previously unannounced cases. This brings the total number of cases to 18,163 while the death toll is 682.

"I offer my condolences and prayers to the 15 families that lost a loved one. All across the country, people are losing their lives to this virus, but we have to keep fighting this pandemic together," tribal President Jonathan Nez said.

He added that the tribe is working with Navajo Area Indian Health Service and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to request and secure additional medical personnel to provide some relief to health care providers here.

The Navajo Department of Health is working to expand isolation sites to help slow the spread of the virus, Nez explained.

Today marks the start of another three-week lockdown for residents on the tribal land and reimplementation of 57-hour weekend lockdowns.

The tribe's health department, Navajo Area IHS and Navajo Epidemiology Center shifted reporting the number of cases in each county that comprises tribal land in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah to reporting cases in the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS.

4 p.m.: The New Mexico Department of Health is reporting 1,872 new cases of COVID-19, raising the total number of New Mexicans who have tested positive this year to 109,947. The state also recorded seven coronavirus-related fatalities on Dec. 7, including a San Juan County resident in his 60s who had underlying medical conditions and was hospitalized.

The Farmington zip code 87401 was one of the places with the highest number of cases on Dec. 7. State health officials say 44 people who live in the 87401 zip code tested positive for the virus. Nearly 37% of the 119 new cases in San Juan County were people who live in the 87401 zip code.

On Saturday, New Mexico reported 1,925 cases and 32 deaths as the state continues to deal with a COVID-19 surge, the Associated Press reported.

Health officials had been warning that cases could go up in weeks following family gatherings over the Thanksgiving holiday and related travel.

Meanwhile, the New Mexico Human Services Department has been appropriated $5 million by the state Legislature to provide emergency financial assistance to low income state residents who didn’t get a federal COVID-19 tax relief economic impact payment.

The Human Services Department has partnered with the Taxation and Revenue Department to disburse the funds to New Mexican families. State residents must submit their information via an online portal by Dec. 11 to determine if they qualify.

The Human Services and Taxation and Revenue departments are working to ensure this appropriation is distributed prior to a Dec. 28 deadline.

4:30 p.m.: According to the New Mexico Department of Health, 1,925 New Mexicans tested positive for COVID-19 on Dec. 5 and health officials reported 33 additional fatalities.

These new cases mean that 106,856 New Mexicans have contracted the virus and, of those people, 1,738 have died.

The new fatalities include two San Juan County residents – a man in his 30s and a woman in her 70s. Both were hospitalized and had underlying medical conditions.

The Farmington 87401 zip code was one of the zip codes with the highest number of cases on Dec. 5. Health officials say 56 of the new cases were residents within the 87401 zip code. About a third of the San Juan County cases were from that zip code. A total of 166 San Juan County residents tested positive on Dec. 5.

7:38 p.m.: The Navajo Nation saw 236 new COVID-19 cases as well as five more deaths in today's report by health officials.

In an online forum today, personnel from the Navajo Area Indian Health Service stated that the tribe is in a major health care crisis due to the overwhelming surge in coronavirus infections, according to a press release from the Office of the President and Vice President.

"Our health care providers and medical personnel have reported that due to the significant rise in COVID-19 cases over the last several weeks, our health care system is in crisis mode now," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the release.

"Shortage of hospital beds, oxygen supplies, medical personnel and increasing wait times to transfer severe COVID-19 patients are just some of the major problems that hospital facilities are now experiencing," he said.

The health care providers also pleaded with the public to stay at home and follow recommendations to help reduce spreading the virus.

Updates for Tuesday, Dec. 1

8 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health has identified 75 communities with uncontrolled spread of COVID-19, including several Northern Agency chapters in San Juan County.

Based on information collected from Nov. 13 to Nov. 26, the health department named Hogback, Naschitti, Nenahnezad, Newcomb, San Juan, Sanostee, Sheep Springs, Shiprock, Two Grey Hills and Upper Fruitland on the list released today.

The update comes has the health department reported 104 new cases and three more deaths related to the disease. There are now 16,711 cases, including 12 previously unannounced cases, and the death toll is 656.

Health agencies shifted reporting the number of cases in each county that comprises tribal land in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah to reporting cases in the eight service units under the Navajo Area Indian Health Service.

The latest tallies were released by the Office of the President and Vice President and it included reports that 9,425 people have recovered while 160,369 tests have been administered.

4:10 p.m.: Nearly 100,000 New Mexicans have tested positive for the coronavirus since it was first detected in the state in March. As of Dec. 1, the New Mexico Department of Health reported that 99,419 New Mexicans have had COVID-19. That includes 2,330 people who tested positive on Dec. 1.

Of the people who have contracted the virus, 1,589 have died including 21 new deaths reported on Dec. 1. Two of the new fatalities were San Juan County residents, including a 20-year-old man who had underlying medical conditions and a man in his 80s who had underlying conditions and was hospitalized.

There are 909 people hospitalized in New Mexico with COVID-19.

The following counties had more than 100 new positive COVID-19 tests:
