COVID-19: Updates on the number of coronavirus cases in San Juan County and Navajo Nation

The Daily Times staff

As 2021 begins, New Mexico continues to struggle with high numbers of new COVID-19 cases. All but one county in the state remained in the restrictive red tier as the new year started. The red tier includes the most strict business restrictions, including a prohibitions on indoor dining.

More than 2,000 New Mexicans died of COVID-19 in 2020 and more than 142,000 people living in the state tested positive for the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, vaccines are now being distributed to long-term care facilities like nursing homes and the state hopes the vaccines will soon be available for the general public. People can register to get the vaccine when it is available at cvvaccine.nmhealth.org.

The Nez-Lizer Administration hosts an online town hall to provide COVID-19 updates on Feb. 1 at 10 a.m. on the Nez-Lizer Facebook page and YouTube channel.

Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and Vice President Myron Lizer visited two vaccination sites over the weekend.

They went to Tséhootsooí Medical Center's vaccine site in Fort Defiance, Arizona, on Sunday, where according to the press release health care workers offered approximately 1,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccines to people living within the Fort Defiance Service Unit.

They were at the Gallup Indian Medical Center Saturday where staff also administered more than 1,000 vaccine doses to people over 65 who live in the Gallup Service Area.

President Jonathan Nez commended Navajo Area IHS and the tribal health facilities for "working seven days a week now to administer the vaccines."

"There is great support and confidence in the COVID-19 vaccines on the Navajo Nation and our health care workers are getting them into the arms of our people as quickly and efficiently as possible," Nez said. "Going out to the vaccine events gives us great insight into the numbers of people who want to receive the vaccine."

Nez also noted the dangers of travel and abandoning safety precautions, his office citing Arizona's reported 5,025 new cases Sunday, Utah's 1,194 cases and New Mexico's 530 new cases and noting the impacts the pandemic has had on the community.

"We are seeing good progress, but we also take the time to pray and offer our condolences to all of the families that have lost loved ones to this virus. You are in our thoughts and prayers every day," said President Nez. "Please keep praying and taking all precautions. There are now COVID-19 variants in several states including Arizona, so please wear a mask and do everything you can to protect yourselves."

4:23 p.m.: Northern Navajo Medical Center has announced COVID-19 vaccination events in Upper Fruitland and Shiprock this week.

The hospital will provide vaccines to people 65 and over on Jan. 21 at the Walter Collins Center in Upper Fruitland and on Jan. 22 at the Shiprock Chapter house in Shiprock. Both start at 9 a.m.

"We will have enough vaccine to provide immunization to at least 500 elders each day," states the post on the Shiprock Indian Health Service Facebook page.

The event is open to older Navajo adults from chapters in the Shiprock Service Unit as well as those who live in Aztec, Bloomfield, Farmington and Kirtland.

Like previous events, those who want to receive the vaccine must bring identification to verify age and must be active patients at either Northern Navajo Medical Center, Dzilth-Na-O-Dith-Hle Health Center or Four Corners Regional Health Center.

They must not have received other vaccines – such as flu or shingles – in the past two weeks or were diagnosed with COVID-19 within the last 90 days.

Because vaccine supply is limited, health care officials encourage people to continue wearing face masks, practice social distancing, wash your hands and stay home when you are sick.

"Updates will be provided when we are able to start vaccinating more groups of people, beyond the elders. We will schedule more vaccine clinics at other chapters over the next several weeks, as soon as we receive more vaccine doses," the post states.

Updates for Saturday, Jan. 9

10:30 p.m.: Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez on Saturday cautioned recipients of hardship assistance funds that will start to be distributed next week to be cautious, as a previous disbursement of federal aid was linked to a spike in COVID-19 cases when people went shopping or traveled.

His warning came as the Navajo Department of Health and other agencies reported 175 new COVID-19 cases on the Navajo Nation and three new deaths. The total number of COVID-19 cases reached 24,979 Saturday, including 25 cases in which reporting was delayed, according to a release by the Office of the President and Vice President.

The death toll has now risen to 869 since the start of the pandemic. There have been 12,690 recoveries, and 215,106 COVID-19 tests were performed.

"It appears that the recent holidays combined with the federal relief funds that people are receiving are contributing to the high numbers of daily COVID-19 cases that we are seeing," Nez said in the release. "The Office of the Controller recently reported that the hardship assistance funds will begin to be distributed next week as well. It is everyone's responsibility to take precautions and hold your loved ones accountable. When the federal government issued relief funds several months ago, we saw a spike in new cases as a result of more people traveling and going into public. This time, we have to do better."

He urged people to stay home and continue to wear masks, avoid social gatherings with people not in one’s household and socially distance.

The Navajo Nation's vice president asked the public for patience and cooperation as a swamped community of health professionals works to circulate COVID-19 vaccines to the public.

"There is high demand for the vaccines in every part of the country, so please be patient and understand that our health care system is doing their best to help as many of our people as they can," said Vice President Myron Lizer. "Unfortunately, our health care workers are also being challenged by the high number of cases and the continued spread of the virus. Please be diligent and continue to pray for our Nation."

The release also noted that high numbers of daily COVID-19 cases led to Public Health Emergency Order No. 2021-001, which takes effect Monday, Jan. 11. It extends the stay-at-home order and 57-hour weekend lockdowns that began last year through Monday, Jan. 25.

The order is available online at: https://www.ndoh.navajo-nsn.gov/COVID-19.
