Farmington police identify man killed in officer-involved shooting

FARMINGTON — The Farmington Police Department identified the man shot and killed by police on Oct. 10 as Norbert Beyet, 58, of Farmington.

Farmington police officers were dispatched in the early evening of Oct. 10 to the intersection of Rio Vista Way and Rio Vista Court, a residential neighborhood near the busy intersection of E. 30th Street and N. Hutton Avenue.

Farmington Police Department spokesperson Nicole Brown said in an Oct. 11 press release that a "revolver-type handgun" was recovered from the scene.

Police received a report at 6:12 p.m. Oct. 10 that a man was threatening people with a gun in the 2800 block of Rio Vista Court.

Farmington officers and the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office had help from the Air One helicopter, which flew low circles over the area during the incident.

The chopper "had visual of the situation and updated FPD officers as they arrived on scene," the release stated. "FPD officers reported being confronted with a weapon. When the weapon was pointed at the officers, one officer fired. No officers were injured in the incident. The male subject was pronounced dead at the scene."

Police scanner traffic showed a flurry of activity around 6:30 p.m. as the shooting scene was secured.

Police dispatched an officer and paramedics to Rio Vista Way and Rio Vista Court in response to the scene. An additional officer was sent to help with traffic.

Neighbors home around lunch time on Oct. 11 in the 2800 block of Rio Vista Court The Daily Times approached for interviews all declined comment.

A single FPD patrol vehicle was parked along the street at the time.

The most recent incident where a Farmington police officer shot and killed a man was during the early hours of March 6, 2018.

Andrew Rossi, 25, was shot and killed at the Motel 6 at 1600 Bloomfield Blvd. when he charged at an officer with a knife and Officer Alfonso Sifuentes fired four rounds at Rossi.

Court documents stated Rossi was a suspect in an incident where a victim in Ignacio, Colorado suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
