Here are the August coronavirus updates from San Juan County, Four Corners region

After New Mexico saw its largest spike in new COVID-19 cases in July, in-person learning was delayed until September. The state is focusing on reducing spread and making it safe for children to return to school.

The first case of the coronavirus documented in San Juan County was announced on March 21. By the end of July, nearly 3,000 San Juan County residents had tested positive for the virus and 20,600 New Mexicans had received positive test results.

In the first five months, COVID-19 claimed about 180 San Juan County lives.

New Mexicans are required to wear masks when in public spaces.

Updates for Monday, Aug. 31

4 p.m.: New Mexico saw an increase of 73 cases of COVID-19 on Aug. 31, according to a press release from the governor's office. The new cases include six in San Juan County, eight in McKinley County and one in Sandoval County. There have now been 25,352 New Mexicans test positive for the virus. Of those people, 12,960 have recovered and 779 have died.

Health officials reported nine new fatalities, including a San Juan County resident in her 70s who was hospitalized.

There are 65 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in New Mexico.

Updates for Sunday, Aug. 30

11 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, in coordination other health agencies, on Sunday reported 11 new COVID-19 cases on the Navajo Nation and one new death. The total number of positive COVID-19 cases is now 9,800.

The total number of deaths has reached 502 as of Sunday and 7,057 individuals were listed as having recovered from the virus. There have been 94,403 COVID-19 tests administered. The release noted that on Sunday there were 448 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Utah, in Arizona there were 374 new cases 107 in New Mexico.

The Navajo Nation’s president urged continued vigilance.

"As we proceed closer to the start of the flu season, we have to continue wearing our masks and practicing all of the preventative measures that we have in place for COVID-19,” said Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez. “I believe that if we continue wearing masks, practicing social distancing, staying home as much as possible, avoiding large crowds, and washing your hands often, it will help keep the number of flu cases relatively low as well. We have to keep fighting COVID-19 together and that will help us during the flu season as well. We will be much better prepared.”

Vice President Myron Lizer thanked “health care experts, contact tracers, and epidemiology teams for their work to keep our people safe and for bringing our numbers down. We have to keep listening to their advice and evaluating the data to keep our numbers down.”

5:40 p.m.: The New Mexico Department of Health on Sunday announced 107 new cases of COVID-19 in the state, and the death of a Lea County man in his 60s who had underlying health conditions.

The number of virus-related deaths in New Mexico is now 770. There have been 190 deaths in San Juan County.

As of Sunday, there are 66 people hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19 and 12,913 patients who have recovered.

The most recent cases are:

• 22 new cases in Bernalillo County

• 28 new cases in Chaves County

• 6 new cases in Curry County

• 6 new cases in Doña Ana County

• 4 new cases in Eddy County

9:30 p.m.: The death toll from the novel coronavirus on the Navajo Nation reached 500 today.

Health officials for the tribe reported the latest death in tonight's report as well as 14 new positive cases.

While the total number of cases increased by 14, officials also reported 165 additional cases that were identified recently and had occurred from April 6 to Aug. 12.

The latest data brings the total number of cases to 9,780.

The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center shifted reporting the number of cases in each county that comprises tribal land in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah to reporting cases in the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS.

The latest figures and tallies were released by the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President and it included reports that 7,032 people have recovered while 94,099 tests have been administered.

The Navajo Nation will start a 32-hour lockdown at 9 p.m. Saturday. It will end at 5 a.m. Monday.

4 p.m.: New Mexico health officials reported 126 new cases of COVID-19, including 11 in San Juan County. The number of fatalities increased by three on Aug. 28.

There have been 25,042 positive cases since the pandemic began in March. Of those people, 12,679 have recovered and 767 have died. There are 72 people hospitalized in the state.

The report included four new cases of the novel coronavirus, the number of positive cases now totals 9,601.

"It's not realistic to think that we will ever have zero cases of COVID-19 until there is a safe vaccine available. Yesterday we had six new cases and today we have 14. As I've stated previously, there remains substantial risk for everyone because there are still high numbers of cases in nearby towns and cities," tribal President Jonathan Nez said.

"We all have to remain diligent and stay focused. We can't become too relaxed on practicing safety measures. Keep wearing your masks, practicing social distancing, washing your hands, avoiding large crowds and staying home as much as possible," he continued.

6:05 p.m.: New Mexico health officials reported 205 new cases of COVID-19 on Aug. 26, including five in San Juan County. The largest increase was in Bernalillo County, where there were 39 new cases.

There have now been 24,732 New Mexicans test positive for the virus. Of those people, 12,193 have recovered and 755 have died. The fatalities increased by five in the Aug. 26 report.

There are 71 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in New Mexico.

Update for Sunday, Aug. 23

9:35 p.m.: New Mexico public health officials report 98 new confirmed COVID-19 cases and two additional deaths as of Sunday.

The latest numbers from the New Mexico Department of Health increase the state’s totals to 24,396 cases and 745 deaths.

The number of infections is thought to be far higher because many people have not been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected with the virus without feeling sick.

According to Johns Hopkins University data analyzed by The Associated Press, the seven-day rolling average of daily new cases in New Mexico decreased over the past two weeks while the rolling average of deaths was nearly unchanged.

The rolling average for new cases decreased from 198 new cases on Aug. 7 to 138 on Aug. 21, while the rolling average for deaths was just under 5 on Aug. 7 and just over 5 on Aug. 21.

• Navajo Nation health officials have reported 14 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and four additional deaths.

That brings the total number of people infected to 9,545 with the known death toll at 493 as of Saturday night as the reservation began another 32-hour lockdown that ends at 5 a.m. Monday.

Navajo Department of Health officials said 91,856 people have been tested for the coronavirus and 7,060 have recovered.

The Navajo Nation lifted its stay-at-home order on Aug. 16, but is asking residents to leave their homes only for emergencies or essential activities.

Much of the Navajo Nation has been closed since March as the coronavirus swept through the vast reservation that extends into New Mexico, Utah and Arizona.

The tribe started its 32-hour lockdown at 9 p.m. and it will end at 5 a.m. Monday.

"Here on the Navajo Nation, we have gone 23 consecutive days with less than 50 new daily cases, but we have to remain diligent," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in today's press release.

"As we enter the weekend lockdown, we urge Navajo residents to stay home and avoid nonessential travels. Our contact tracers find that more of our Navajo Nation residents are contracting COVID-19 when they travel to cities such as Phoenix, Albuquerque and others. The safest place to be is home," Nez said.

5 p.m.: New Mexico health officials reported 213 new cases of COVID-19 today, including 10 in San Juan County.

The new cases increased the number of New Mexicans who have tested positive for the virus to 24,302. Of those people, 11,458 have recovered and 743 have died. The fatalities increased by four in today's report.

There are 68 people hospitalized with the virus in the state.

A press release from the president's office states that tribal President Jonathan Nez, Miss Navajo Nation Shaandiin Parrish and the Navajo Police Department distributed face masks, hand sanitizer and preventive tips and information today at a checkpoint on U.S. Highway 191 in Chinle, Arizona.

"Here on the Navajo Nation, we have gone 21 consecutive days with less than 50 new daily cases, but we have to remain diligent. We must adapt all preventative measures into our daily lives to lower the spread of the flu and COVID-19 on the Navajo Nation," Nez said in the release.

4 p.m.: New Mexico saw 208 new COVID-19 cases on Aug. 20, including seven in San Juan County.

There have been 23,951 New Mexicans test positive for the virus. Of those people, 11,145 have recovered and 734 have died. The number of fatalities increased by five on Aug. 20.

The latest figures and tallies were released by the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President and it included reports that 6,978 people have recovered while 89,003 tests have been administered.

The president's office along with the tribe's Division of Human Resources and the Navajo Health Command Operations Center today implemented phase one of a reopening plan, which serves as a guide to safely and gradually reopen businesses on the tribal land, according to the office's press release.

The releases states that the plan includes guidelines for residents to follow, directs businesses to implement policies and procedures to meet specific standards and provides a color-coded system for the reopening and based on data-driven analysis and input from health experts.

"The reopening plan will not be rushed. The administration spent many weeks working together with health care experts to develop the phased-in reopening plan. The plan prioritizes elders and individuals that are at higher risk for severe illness. It ensures the nation's health care system is responsive to increases in admissions and responds to future crises and any resurgences while allowing a phased path to recovery. Businesses on the nation will reopen progressively, in conjunction with a color-coded status schedule, which identifies different reopening activity levels. As we slowly reopen, we urge Navajo residents to continue practicing preventative measures to avoid exposure. We still need to be alert and prepared," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the release.

The executive branch also created the Navajo Nation COVID-19 Worksite Safety Guidelines for its divisions and departments to follow as administrative leave of non-essential branch employees ended on Aug. 16.

"We also commend the essential employees and first responders who have been working since the pandemic. Their hard work and dedication are recognized and appreciated. While some employees are returning to their workplace, we remind them to stay vigilant. We all have an important role in keeping our workplaces safe and clean of COVID-19. For example, stay home if you are sick, wear a face covering, monitor your health, practice social distancing, wash your hands often, cover your sneezes and coughs, avoid sharing items, and clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects," tribal Vice President Myron Lizer said in the release.

4 p.m.: New Mexico reported 98 new cases of COVID-19 on Aug. 17, including two in San Juan County, four in McKinley County and three in Sandoval County.

The new cases increase the number of New Mexicans who have tested positive for COVID-19 to 23,500. Of those people, 10,602 have recovered and 718 have died.

The coronavirus-related fatalities increased by four in the Monday report.

There are 119 patients hospitalized in New Mexico.

The latest figures and tallies were released at 11:36 p.m. on Sunday by the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President. It included reports that 6,970 people have recovered while 74,260 tests have been administered.

According to the release, the department of health issued a new public health emergency order that rescinds the directive for residents to stay at home and implements a "safe at home" status that encourages individuals "to exercise personal responsibility but are not ordered to stay home."

The recent order reinstates requirements for conducting drive-in gatherings and reinforces the daily curfew and lockdowns for the remaining weekends in August.

It also states that the tribe's roads remain closed to visitors and tourists for the duration of the tribal public health emergency.

"The public health order does not require individuals to stay home, but we continue to encourage Navajo residents to limit their travels and leave their place of residence only for emergencies or perform essential activities and errands. We all play an important role in keeping the number of COVID-19 cases low. As the Navajo Nation is taking small and responsible steps to reopen the economy in a phased approach that is data-driven, it is important to stay alert and prepared to protect ourselves and others," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the press release.

5 p.m.: New Mexico health officials on Sunday reported 113 more COVID-19 cases and three new deaths.

New Mexico has now has a total of 23,408 COVID-19 cases. Nine of the new cases reported Sunday were in San Juan County.

The number of deaths among New Mexico residents related to the COVID-19 pandemic has reached 714. A total of 187 San Juan County residents have died after becoming ill with COVID-19. None of the deaths reported Sunday were San Juan County residents.

6 p.m.: New Mexico registered eight deaths among its 146 new COVID-19 cases on Aug. 15, according to figures from the Governor's Office.

New Mexico has totaled 23,302 cases of the virus. None of the deaths recorded on Aug. 15 were from San Juan County, but the county did report nine new cases of the virus, and its total has reached 3,093 cases.

Three of those who died were from Dona Ana County, while two were from Bernalillo County. Cibola, Eddy and Rio Arriba counties reported one death each. Bernalillo County had the most new cases in the state on Aug. 15 with 19.

A total of 187 San Juan County residents have died after becoming ill with COVID-19. Statewide, the virus has claimed 711 lives.

According to state officials, New Mexico has registered 23,302 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began. State officials said 113 people were hospitalized in New Mexico on Aug. 15 for COVID-19. The total number of people tested for the virus in New Mexico is 665,291.

8:36 p.m.: Eighteen new cases of COVID-19 for the Navajo Nation were reported today by the Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center.

The health agencies did not report any recent deaths related to the disease.

They shifted reporting the number of cases in each county that comprises tribal land in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah to reporting cases in the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS.

4:17 p.m.: The 175 new cases of COVID-19 reported Friday by New Mexico state health officials raise the statewide case total to 23,160.

There were also six more virus-related deaths in New Mexico, among them a man in his 30s from San Juan County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions. The statewide death toll from the pandemic now stands at 703.

As of Friday there are 125 individuals hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19 and 10,182 COVID-19 patients have recovered.

"A few days ago, we only had seven new cases of COVID-19 reported and today we have 38. We can't become complacent and we cannot afford another spike in new cases. We have to stay the course and keep listening to our health care experts. Do not travel outside of the Navajo Nation and put yourself at risk of getting the virus and bringing it home. Keep your guard up and keep praying for your family, communities and the entire Navajo Nation," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in a press release.

There will be a 32-hour lockdown this weekend, beginning at 9 p.m. Saturday through 5 a.m. Monday. Businesses will be closed during the lockdown.

The release stated the administration introduced on Thursday the "Navajo Nation Reopening Plan," which serves as a guide to safely and gradually reopen business on the Navajo Nation.

The plan includes safety guidelines for residents to follow during the duration of the pandemic, directs places of business to implement COVID-19 policies and procedures to meet certain standards and provides a color-coded system for progressively reopening business based on data-driven analysis and input from health experts.

The reopening plan is available to view at www.navajoreopening.navajo-nsn.gov.

"The Navajo Nation has had 49 consecutive days with less than 100 reported daily cases of COVID-19, and 14 consecutive days under 50 daily cases. We commend and thank our Navajo people for listening to our health care experts. Now that we are moving forward with a phased-in reopening plan that includes safety measures and guidelines, we have to remain diligent and proceed very carefully. If we see a spike in new cases, we will immediately re-evaluate the plan and proceed accordingly based on the data and recommendations of our health care experts," tribal Vice President Myron Lizer said in the release.

6 p.m.: An additional 177 confirmed cases of COVID-19 were reported in New Mexico Thursday, bringing the total to 22,987 since the pandemic began. Two more deaths were also reported, bringing that tally to 697.

None of the deaths happened in San Juan County, which reported three new cases.

The number of infections is thought to be far higher because many people have not been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected with the virus without feeling sick.

Officials said they were most concerned about the southeastern part of the state.

"That's where we're really focusing on testing and intervention," said David Scrase, head of the state's Human Services Department.

Another concern is that nearly 16% of cases in New Mexico involve people under the age of 20. That's higher than the rest of the country, Scrase said.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham warned Thursday that family gatherings and long holiday weekends have been a source of infection for many New Mexicans who have contracted COVID-19 and that they make for the worst possible situation as health officials look to reduce the spread of the virus.

"We are seeing good signs with the gradual decrease in new cases overall for the states of New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah over the last few days, but we must continue to stay home as much as possible and avoid traveling to cities and towns off the Navajo Nation. There remains substantial risk of contracting COVID-19. When certain states reopened in May, we saw how quickly the virus can re-emerge and spread among communities. We are very grateful to all of our nation's health care workers. We do not want to put them in a position where our health care system is strained again due to new cases. Please stay home, wear a mask, wash your hands, practice social distancing, and avoid large crowds. We are beating COVID-19 little by little, but we have to stay focused and vigilant," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the release from his office.

4 p.m.: New Mexico health officials reported 132 new cases of COVID-19, including three in San Juan County, 11 in McKinley County and four in Sandoval County.

The new cases raise the number of New Mexicans who have tested positive for the virus to 22,444. Of those people, 9,428 have recovered and 690 have died. The coronavirus-related fatalities increased by five on Aug. 10.

10:46 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies reported 15 new COVID-19-positive cases on the Navajo Nation Sunday and two deaths.

“The total number of deaths now totals 472 as of Sunday,” the Office of the President and Vice President said in a release. “Reports indicate that 6,859 individuals have recovered from COVID-19. 85,206 COVID-19 tests have been administered. The total number of COVID-19 positive cases is 9,308.”

Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said in the release that the fact there were 15 new cases of COVID-19 reported Sunday while Arizona reported 816 new cases and Utah reported 376 new cases “is a good indication that the majority of the Navajo Nation’s residents are complying with the public health emergency orders and that they are listening to the advice of our health care experts. We have to continue to do what we are doing to keep flattening the curve.

Nez said there can’t be a rush to “fully reopen the government, parks, and businesses. We have a work group that has been developing a plan to gradually reopen the Navajo Nation in a way that provides for safety measures, accountability measures, and prioritizes the health and safety of all employees and residents.”

4 p.m.: New Mexico health officials reported 155 new cases of COVID-19 on Aug. 8, including four in San Juan County, six in McKinley County and three in Rio Arriba County.

There have been more than 22,000 New Mexicans testing positive for the virus and the new cases increased that number to 22,115. Of those people, 9,262 have recovered and 681 have died.

The state recorded six new coronavirus-related fatalities. None of the people who died were San Juan County residents.

There are 127 people hospitalized in New Mexico with COVID-19.

Today's press release states that the Nez-Lizer administration and the Winslow Indian Health Center will distribute food and essential supplies on Saturday at 10 a.m. MDT the Winslow Indian Health Care Center in Winslow, Arizona then at 2 p.m. MDT at the Leupp Chapter house in Leupp, Arizona and at 5 p.m. MDT at the Dilkon Chapter house in Dilkon, Arizona.

"The food distributions will be a no-contact event, which means everyone must remain in your vehicle at all times and please keep your windows rolled up. Our team will place the food and supply items in your vehicle with no direct contact for the health and safety of everyone. We are very thankful to the Winslow Indian Health Care Center for working together with our team to help our Navajo people during this pandemic," tribal Vice President Myron Lizer said in the release.

4 p.m.: New Mexico health officials reported 197 new cases of COVID-19, including 11 in San Juan County, nine in Sandoval County, four in McKinley County and one in Rio Arriba County.

The number of New Mexicans who have tested positive is now 21,965. Of those people, 9,166 have recovered and 675 have died.

Coronavirus-related fatalities increased by six on Aug. 7. None of the deaths were San Juan County residents.

A separate press release states there will be lockdowns for 32 hours for each weekend this month. Each weekend lockdown will begin at 9 p.m. Saturdays and end at 5 a.m. Mondays.

Also adjusted is the start time for the daily curfew, which will now start at 9 p.m. and will still end at 5 a.m.

"With the revised hours for the weekend lockdown, it presents more time for families to prepare for the upcoming winter season by gathering firewood, supplies, food and other essential items. The winter season will present more challenges due to the flu season, so we all need to remain diligent about staying home, washing hands, wearing masks, social distancing and avoiding large crowds. Please continue to pray for our communities, frontline warriors an those fighting the virus," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the release.

The latest figures and tallies were released by the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President and it included reports that 6,747 people have recovered while 82,708 people have been tested.

During today's online town hall meeting, tribal President Jonathan Nez announced changes in the weekday and weekend curfews.

The new start time for the weekday curfew will be 9 p.m. However, the end time will remain at 5 a.m.

There will be a 32-hour curfew for the weekend, starting at 9 p.m. on Aug. 8 and ending on 5 a.m. on Aug. 10.

"The 32-hour weekend lockdown will be assessed down the road once we review the data and receive recommendations from our health care experts. As long as there is no vaccine, we have to continue to do everything we can to keep flattening the curve. Today, we only have 17 new cases, but our goal is to get to zero new cases. Until then, please continue to stay home, wash your hands, wear your mask, avoid large crowds and practice social distancing to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. The Navajo people along with all of our health care workers and frontline warriors are doing a great job. Let's keep fighting hard and do not let up against this virus," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the release.

4 p.m.: New Mexico health officials reported 214 new cases of COVID-19, including five in San Juan County, eight in Sandoval County, two in Rio Arriba County and six in McKinley County. The largest increase reported Aug. 4 was in Bernalillo County, where health officials identified 67 new cases.

The new cases raise the number of New Mexicans who have tested positive for the virus to 21,340. Of those people, 8,685 have recovered and 658 have died.

There were three coronavirus-related fatalities reported on Aug. 4, including a Beehive Homes resident in his 80s.

There are 133 people hospitalized in New Mexico with COVID-19.

Updates for Sunday, Aug. 2

10:57 p.m.: On Sunday, the Navajo Department of Health and other agencies reported that 35 new COVID-19-positive cases were identified on the Navajo Nation. One more death was also reported.

That brings the total number of COVID-19 positive cases for the Navajo Nation to 9,103. The total number of deaths has reached 461 as of Sunday, the Office of the President and Vice President said in a press release Sunday night.

There have been 6,736 recoveries from the virus, and 81,665 people have been tested for COVID-19, the release stated.

"The number of cases continues to decrease in the Navajo Nation," said Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez. "On behalf of the Administration, we thank Navajo residents who comply with all public health orders to slow and stop the coronavirus spread. As surrounding areas are reopened and reopening, the Navajo Nation is taking precautions to avoid another breakout."

Officials warned residents to be aware of any possible symptoms, and to contact medical personnel if they have them.

"It is important to monitor your symptoms if you traveled or left your home," said Vice President Myron Lizer. "COVID-19 symptoms can range from mild to severe illness and appear two to 14 days after exposure. To avoid exposure, wear a face mask, maintain a six-foot distance from others, wash your hands often, and frequently touch high-touched surfaces. We can combat this virus if we stay alert and safe."

4:30 p.m.: New Mexico state health officials announced 226 additional COVID-19 cases Sunday afternoon.

The Department of Health on Sunday also reported three additional deaths in New Mexico related to COVID-19, none in San Juan County.

The number of deaths of New Mexico residents related to COVID-19 is now 654.

As of today, there are 127 individuals hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19 and 8,343 COVID-19 cases are designated as recoveries by the health department.
